Curriculum

Our Curriculum

We use the Lancashire Curriculum across our school to ensure consistency and progression. The curriculum meets the needs of our pupils and our school community.  We have a strong focus on developing children's knowledge in Maths, English and Computing, as well as their personal, social and thinking skills. We run a 4-year rolling programme due to the small nature of our school (31 pupils).

Our Curriculum is always evolving and READING is at the heart of what we deliver.

We aspire to make every child a READER.

Teachers plan topics which are interesting, engaging and cover National Curriculum objectives with lessons delivered in half-termly themes.

Children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One develop their knowledge and understanding of the world, their communication skills and ability to understand numbers. They are taught phonics using the Red Rose Phonics programme (lancashire) daily. We use a range of phonetically decodable books, grouped into phases and sounds,  from Reception - Year 2 (or up to Phase 6). In KS2 we use the 'Accelerated Reader' scheme which individualises each child's reading progression and provides opportunities for them to complete comprehension-style word after each book.

Across our Curriculum, children develop and apply personal, social and emotional skills and learn to become more independent.

In Key Stage Two, the themes continue with children given increasing opportunities to develop their thinking, social and personal skills and further develop their independence. We aim to teach the children to know and remember more by planning enrichments and school visits/visitors as part of our Curriculum, and to use 'hands on' experiences. Writing is embedded throughout the curriculum with frequent opportunities to write for a variety of purposes.

These subjects are taught daily in school:
  • English
  • Phonics/Reading - KS1
  • Spelling and Reading - KS2
  • Maths

INDEPENDENCE

Independence and collaboration are encouraged from the earliest years. Children are taught as part of a whole class, in groups or individually, depending on the nature of the activity or individual need. The progress of all children is carefully monitored and highly achieving children receive additional challenge.

PARTNERSHIP WITH PARENTS

The parents of Brennand's Endowed Primary School have a long tradition of supporting home/school links. Regular fund-raising activities have helped to provide additional resources for the children and social events enhance the community spirit.

PARENTS IN SCHOOL LIFE

We aim to keep parents regularly informed about events, activities and the curriculum in general. Newsletters are sent to all parents so they are informed about activities and events in school and can complement their children's learning at home. All parents are welcome to take part in our weekly "Merit Assembly" on Friday morning. Parents are informed if their child is going to contribute to the assembly. We are grateful to the many parents who help out in school on a regular basis, with expert help and knowlege and real life experience which brings lessons to life for the children. We are always looking for new volunteers. Please don't be shy.

OUR SCHOOL AND OUR COMMUNITY

Our school plays an integral part in the life of the community it serves. Children are frequently involved in community activities and events such as contirbuting to 'The Villager' magazine, May Queen Festival Celebrations , May Pole and Country dancing, The Hodder Valley Show and the Steam Rally. The children also compile a school newspaper which is distributed around the village.

Our Patron of Reading

This year, we welcome our Patron of Reading to our school! A Patron on Reading is a school's special children's author, poet, storyteller or illustrator. The school and their patron develop a relationship over a period of time and work together to develop a LOVE of reading.

We are excited to have the wonderful author, Dan Worsely, as our Patron.

We are looking forward to his 1st visit this Autumn Term which will comprise of story telling workshops in the hall and some writing workshops for all chidlren.

His energy and passion for reading is contagious and we are so lucky that he chose our school!

You will be seeing lots of Dan over the course of the year and we can't wait to see the what the year brings.

Thank you Dan...and in his words...KEEP READING!
